At Spiegel and Son we do not believe in the hawking method of salesmanship. We will never drag unsuspecting people off the street into our office, and we will never pressure you into making a purchase you are not 100% happy about. Many jewlry stores feature high pressure commissioned salespeople. It is questionable whether these individuals have their customers best interests in mind.

We believe in relationships at Spiegel and Son. Our goal is to find or create a beautiful piece of jewelry that you or your loved one will cherish and enjoy for a long time. We are confident that if we do this you will continue to trust us with your jewelry needs and will refer your friends and family to us. This is a very old fashioned formula, but it has served us well for over 60 years. And best of all, we do not have to rely on human spam!

Artificially raising prices to create bigger sales and discounts of 50 percent and 70 percent "is trickery" and "a race to the bottom", said Penney's new chief executive Ron Johnson.

I couldn't agree more with Mr Johnson. With the aid of technology like the internet, consumers today are more savvy than ever. The buying public knows value and has a good idea what constitutes a fair price. If they don't they can find out with a few clicks on their smart phone, while shopping at J.C. Penny or another retailer.

Why is jewelry the lucky category to still have its prices inflated then marked down by Penney's? I don't know. I can't remember the last time I walked by a jewelry store in the mall and did not see a 40% off sign. The internet is the worst, you can regularly find jewelry and watches sold for 90% off. Who believes this bologna? I don't know.

I do know that when you shop at Spiegel and Son you will get a fair price on a beautiful piece of jewelry. I will look you in the eye and make sure my first price is reasonable and represents value for you, my treasured customer. Housing crisis, unemployment, and outsourcing are some of the economic challenges we hear about daily in the news. These tough issues often leave me incredibly frustrated and asking myself what can I do to help the situation? The answer is buy American.

There are so many fantastic American jewelry designers and manufacturers. Some of these outfits are quite small, only employing a handful of people, others are large with hundreds on their payrolls.

Spiegel and Son actively pursues American suppliers. When I purchase products from domestic suppliers and you in turn buy their jewelry from me we are insuring that jobs are staying in the U.S. and taxes are being paid to our country. We are contributing to a positive business climate. Nine of my ten major suppliers are based in the United States.

Another reason I buy American is customer service. Elite customer service is my core business value, it is what I have staked my reputation on. I can only give you the superior service you deserve if my suppliers take good care of me. Dealing with overseas manufacturers can be a real challenge. Time differences, language barriers, shipping delays, and a general difference of opinion on what constitutes quality is just the tip of the iceberg.

I deal with American suppliers who offer outstanding customer service. If I need a rush order they do everything they can to meet the deadline. If an item has to be modified or custom made they will get the job done. There is tremendous value in literally and figuratively speaking the same language as your supplier.

Although anyone who knows me can tell you how uncomfortable I am with any form of technology, even I realize the power and benefits of these electronic devices. These items have transformed the way we run our businesses and live our lives. Their importance cannot be overstated.

I have always considered Spiegel and Son to be more than a place where one goes to buy jewelry. Today there are an endless number of places selling jewelry. Mall stores, websites, home shopping networks, and big box retailers like Wal Mart to name just a few.
